Here’s a classic New York-Style Pizza recipe that
captures the thin, foldable, slightly chewy crust and rich flavor that
makes it iconic:
🍕 New
York-Style Pizza Recipe (1 large 14–16” pizza)
Ingredients
Dough
- 3 ¾ cups (480g) bread flour (or all-purpose flour, but bread flour
is best)
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp instant dry yeast
- 1 ⅓ cups (315ml) warm water (around 100°F/38°C)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Sauce
- 1 can (14–15 oz) crushed tomatoes (San Marzano preferred)
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes
Cheese
- 2 cups (200g) low-moisture whole milk mozzarella, shredded
- Optional: a few fresh basil leaves, grated parmesan, or provolone
slices
Instructions
1. Make the Dough
(24–72 hrs in advance)
- In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Add warm water and olive oil. Mix until dough forms.
- Knead for 7–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or use stand mixer
with dough hook).
- Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough in, and cover tightly.
- Let rise in the fridge for at least 24 hours,
ideally 48–72 hours for best flavor.
2. Make the Sauce
- In a saucepan over medium heat, sauté garlic in olive oil until
fragrant (about 1 min).
- Add crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, oregano, and red pepper
flakes.
- Simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes. Let cool.
3. Shape the Dough
- Remove dough from the fridge 1 hour before baking.
- Preheat oven to 500°F (260°C) or as hot as it goes.
Place pizza stone or steel in oven if using.
- On a floured surface, gently stretch dough into a 14–16” circle—thin
in center, thicker at edge.
4. Assemble the Pizza
- Transfer dough to a pizza peel or parchment if using a
stone/steel.
- Spread ½–¾ cup sauce thinly over the dough.
- Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over top.
- Optional: add grated parmesan or a few basil leaves.
5. Bake
- Slide onto preheated stone/steel or bake on a pizza pan.
- Bake for 7–10 minutes until crust is browned and cheese is
bubbling.
- Broil for 1 minute if needed to brown the cheese.
6. Finish & Serve
- Let rest 1–2 minutes.
- Slice into 8 large wedges.
- Fold, bite, and enjoy like a true New Yorker.
